Why Your Childcare Center Isn't Showing Up on Google (And How to Fix It)
If parents in your area are searching for daycare and your center isn't coming up, you're losing enrollments to competitors who may not even be better than you. They just show up and you don't.
But here's something worth knowing before we get into the fixes: even childcare centers that ARE showing up on Google are seeing fewer calls in 2026 than they were a year ago. Not because their rankings dropped. Because Google itself is changing how local search results look, and the change is not good for small businesses.
Understanding both problems -- why you're not showing up and why showing up is getting harder -- is the only way to stay ahead of this.
What Is the Google Local Pack and Why Does It Matter for Childcare?
When a parent searches "daycare near me" or "preschool in [city]," Google typically shows a map with three local business listings before the regular search results. That's the local pack, and it's prime real estate. Most parents click one of those three results and never scroll further.
If your childcare center isn't in those three spots, you're essentially invisible for the most common way parents search for childcare.
Why Are Google Local Results Showing Fewer Businesses in 2026?
This is the part catching a lot of childcare owners off guard.
Google has been rolling out AI-powered local packs that are replacing the traditional three-business map pack on mobile. These AI packs typically show only two businesses instead of three, have no call buttons, and often surface different businesses than the traditional local pack would have shown.
Early data tracking these AI packs found they surface roughly 32% as many unique businesses compared to traditional local packs, and 88% of markets analyzed showed fewer businesses appearing overall. Even centers ranking well in the traditional local pack are seeing their Google Business Profile calls decline because the format that drove those calls is quietly being replaced on mobile.
Most rank tracking tools can't even detect AI packs yet. So many business owners look at their ranking reports, everything looks fine, and they have no idea their actual visibility is shrinking.
The businesses that adapt now will still get the calls. The ones that don't will wonder why things got so quiet.
Why Isn't My Childcare Center Showing Up in Google Search Results?
If your center isn't appearing in local results at all, the most common culprits are a neglected Google Business Profile, inconsistent business information across the web, and a website that hasn't been optimized for local search.
When we take on a new childcare client, we almost always find the same issues. Wrong or missing categories, hours that haven't been updated in months, a business description that's either blank or so generic it could apply to any daycare in the country, and a profile where nothing has been posted in a very long time.
Google uses all of this to decide whether your business is relevant and trustworthy enough to show to parents searching nearby. A neglected profile signals that the business may not be active or worth surfacing.
How Do You Fix a Google Business Profile for a Childcare Center?
Start with the things that have the most direct impact on rankings and work outward from there.
Your primary category should be "Child Care Agency" or "Preschool" depending on your focus. This has to match the main term parents use to search for you. Getting it wrong, or choosing something too generic like "Education Center," is one of the most common reasons childcare centers don't appear for the searches that actually matter.
Your additional categories should be relevant but limited. Stacking in every loosely related category can actually dilute your relevance rather than expand it.
Your services list matters more than most people realize. Google can surface your profile for specific service searches, and the exact wording you use in your services list affects which queries you appear for. Fixing a single service name has been shown to move a listing from page seven to page one in some cases. Take the time to build out your services completely with descriptive, accurate titles that match how parents search.
Your hours need to be accurate and kept current, including holiday hours. Stale or wrong hours are treated as a quality signal by Google and by parents who show up at the wrong time.
Your business description should be unique, not copy-pasted from your website, and should naturally include your city, the ages you serve, and what makes your program different. Generic descriptions waste a real ranking opportunity.
Fill out your attributes. Payment methods, accessibility features, whether you're women-owned, amenities -- most childcare centers leave these blank entirely. Google uses attributes to match profiles to filtered and long-tail searches that you're currently invisible for.
Fill in your opening date and your "about" information completely. These fields contribute to prominence signals and content depth in ways that most people overlook entirely.
Do Photos Matter for Google Rankings?
Not as a direct ranking factor, but as an engagement signal they matter a lot.
Profiles with real, high-quality photos of your classrooms, outdoor space, and staff get significantly more clicks and inquiries than profiles with no photos or stock images. Google tracks that engagement and it factors into how prominently your profile gets shown over time.
Refresh your photos regularly. A profile where the most recent photo is three years old signals the same thing as a profile that never posts anything -- that nobody is paying attention.
How Often Should a Childcare Center Post on Google Business Profile?
At least once a week. Regular posting supports freshness signals and keeps your profile looking active to both Google and the parents who find it.
Posts don't have to be complicated. A photo from the week, a note about enrollment openings, an upcoming event, a seasonal update. Short and consistent beats long and occasional every time.
Most childcare centers we work with have never posted anything on their profile. That alone puts them behind competitors who post regularly, even when everything else is roughly equal.
How Much Do Reviews Affect Childcare Center Google Rankings?
Significantly. Google factors in review count, average rating, and recency when deciding which businesses to surface in local results.
One nuance worth knowing: a steady stream of new reviews beats a large block of old ones, even if the star average is similar. Review velocity signals to Google that your business is active and that parents are currently engaging with it.
Owner responses matter too. Responding consistently to reviews, including negative ones, is an engagement signal Google tracks. Unresponded negative reviews can quietly hurt your prominence and conversion rate over time.
The keywords parents use in their reviews also reinforce your local relevance. A review that mentions "best preschool in [your city]" helps your rankings for that search in a way that a generic five-star review does not.
The fix is straightforward: ask consistently and make it easy. A direct link to your Google review page sent via text right after a positive parent interaction gets far more responses than waiting for people to find it themselves.
What Else Affects Whether a Childcare Center Shows Up on Google?
Your website matters more than most childcare owners realize.
Google cross-references your website with your Google Business Profile. If your website doesn't clearly mention your city, your neighborhood, and the services you offer, it weakens your local relevance signals. A contact page that matches your GBP details helps Google confidently connect your website to your profile.
Citation consistency is critical. Your business name, address, and phone number need to be letter-for-letter identical across every directory. Our local SEO services include a full citation audit and cleanup so nothing is working against you.
Minor variations like "Suite" vs "Ste" or different phone number formats weaken Google's trust in your information and can cost you local pack visibility. Fixing citation inconsistencies alone has been enough to move listings into the three-pack in many cases.
Strong local backlinks from relevant local sources also support your GBP rankings. A link from a local parenting resource, a community organization, or a local news mention carries more weight than a generic directory link.
Should Childcare Centers Run Google Ads Given What Is Happening with Local Results?
Given the shift toward AI local packs that show fewer businesses and remove call buttons from organic results, running Google Ads for childcare is becoming less optional for centers that want consistent enrollment inquiries.
Google Ads still appear at the top of search results with call buttons and prominent placement, even as AI packs push organic local listings down. Centers running ads are maintaining their call volume. Centers relying entirely on organic visibility are watching it quietly erode.
This doesn't mean organic optimization no longer matters. A strong Google Business Profile and solid local SEO create the foundation that makes everything else work better, including ads. But treating organic visibility as your only strategy in 2026 is a riskier position than it was two years ago.
